Doodle

I just walked in from the grocery and again, like countless other days, I expected to Piper to greet me at the door

Me (preggers) and Pips!
On April 8th  our family unexpectedly lost our beloved Piper-girl.  Micah and I adopted Pipes from a puppy rescue the week we returned home from our honeymoon … which, you know I harassed him for the whole trip.   I remember like it was yesterday, sitting at the Blue Ash Airport and flipping through the paper, finding the ad and begging Micah to take me to “just go look” as all the guys laughed because they knew we were coming back with a new dog!!

Although she was our first baby, she lovingly accepted ALL of our babies with her gentle nature and protective instincts.  She was our guardian … barking at everyone that came within a 100 foot radius of the house.  She would sit at the top of our stairs. Watch our the window and relentlessly inform me of each and ever person that walked by the house.  She was my security when Micah travels … once warning me 10 minutes before our house alarm went off and the garage door had been pulled off the rails.

We had to request a phone call from visitors before they would arrived so we could let her out so she wouldn’t wake the baby!

Her presence has been greatly missed.

Puppy Piper and Tater (My mother-in-laws dog)

She was a fantastic dog but she was not perfect  … but I guess that is what made her fit so well into this family … she drove me crazy at times, just like my kids, my mom, husband =)  On top of the barking …. she would run away ….  I can’t take you how many times I cursed her while woddling by pregnant belly down the street after her.  We wised when pregnant with Paul and finally go her an electric fence.  She knew how to open the garbage can … and just a day before she died, she stole Emilia’s cheeseburger off her dinner plate.   Just Piper being Piper.

Oh, and she loved to chase squirrels …. Loooord, did that dog love to chase squirrels, and bunnies and birds!!  Mostly she was loyal to us and Paul.  She passed quietly in her sleep while laying at Paul's feet.  The vet said she chose the person she loved the best to be next to her when it was time to go.  I find it so ironic that the things that break my heart are often my most treasured and beautiful memories.

My plate is beyond full and when she passed, I thought I needed a break from owning a pet.   I had thought we might wait until Pauly was old enough for a service dog but then after a few days, the loneliness set in.  I really truly missed her … I would here a little rustle and expect Piper to come around the corner.  My heart sank when I remembered.  I would walk around the side of my house and see the track in the grass she wore by running and I would feel a lump in my throat.  My mother in law had to get rid of her food and water bowl because Micah and I couldn’t bring ourselves to do it.

EVERYONE thinks I am crazy =)

And then something inside me told me that this family needed a dog.  Of course, Micah said I was crazy when I went on my obsessive search to find the right one.   By the time, I found him, Micah had come around and we started preparing for a new puppy.  We picked a male so Micah and Pauly wouldn’t be so outnumbered.  He was born at the end of April and we have been waiting on him ever since.  They girls are beyond excited and I am preparing myself for the chaos although I should be used to it by now.

So, here he is … the next member of the clan. I just hope that he with loves us as much a Piper did.
